Baldur's Gate 3 Dank Crypt: How to Explore the Hidden Dungeon

10 September 2026 | 45

Exploring the initial areas of Faerûn in Baldur's Gate 3 often leads adventuring parties toward an ancient, forgotten ruin near the Ravaged Beach. Known as the Dank Crypt, this sprawling underground structure acts as the game's first major trial, testing a player's ability to handle traps, puzzles, and undead encounters. Navigating its shadowed corridors early in Act 1 provides valuable treasures and unlocks essential gameplay mechanics that assist your party throughout the entire campaign.

Finding the Entrances to the Crypt

Players can access the Dank Crypt through four distinct entry points depending on their chosen route across the Overgrown Ruins. You can pick the lock on the ancient door at the beach, picklock the wooden hatch near the chapel road, or lockpick the main chapel entrance. Alternatively, shooting down a suspended boulder creates a hole in the floor that drops you directly into the refectory chambers.

Using the wooden hatch offers the most direct access to the crypt's main halls, bypassing several initial hostile encounters. Entering through the chapel forces players to clear out aggressive bandits before discovering a secret switch behind a stone statue. Recruiting companions like Shadowheart, Astarion, or Lae'zel before entering ensures your party stays well-prepared for combat.

Surviving the Trapped Sarcophagus Chamber

Inside the crypt's central chamber sits an ornate sarcophagus containing a powerful weapon and an important key. Opening this chest triggers grease vents and fire traps across the entire room, quickly turning the floor into an explosive hazard. Successful Perception checks reveal the locations of these vents and a disarming button on a nearby pillar.

To bypass the danger safely, players can cover the floor vents with heavy items like crates, vases, or urns before opening the lid. You can also switch to turn-based mode, loot the sarcophagus, and immediately press the pillar button or use Mage Hand to disable the mechanism. Securing the Engraved Key allows you to safely unlock the heavy doors leading deeper into the complex.

Confronting the Undead Guardians

Passing through the northern oak doors brings your party into a grand chamber filled with dormant ancient scribes. Pressing a hidden button in the northwestern corner opens a secret room but also animates the skeletons for battle. Smart players should disarm or loot all weapons and items from the corpses before pressing the button to weaken the incoming undead.

Bludgeoning weapons deal double damage against these skeletal foes, making maces and warhammers extremely effective in combat. Positioning your party near the doorway allows you to funnel enemies through narrow choke points while denying vision to their spellcasters. Once defeated, you gain unrestricted access to the inner sanctum containing powerful magical artifacts.

Awakening Withers and Securing Rewards

Inside the hidden chamber behind the secret wall, players will discover a heavy chest containing the Amulet of Lost Voices. Interacting with the nearby ornate sarcophagus triggers a scene with Withers, a mysterious undead figure who poses thought-provoking questions. Regardless of your answers, Withers will peacefully leave and establish himself permanently at your campsite.

Unlocking Withers early grants access to vital gameplay services, including reviving fallen party members, recruiting hirelings, and respecting character classes. Additionally, the Amulet of Lost Voices empowers your characters to cast Speak with Dead without consuming spell slots. Fully exploring the Dank Crypt sets a strong foundation for the challenges awaiting your party across Baldur's Gate 3.
